Pärt - Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten
Mendelssohn - Symphony No. 5 ‘Reformation’
Danielpour - Elegies

In September 1944 the liberation of the Netherlands started in South Limburg. The South Netherlands Philharmonic annual memorial concert at the American Cemetery in Margraten is a tribute to the fallen soldiers.

Danielpour was commissioned to compose 'Elegies' by the famous American mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. Her father was killed in action during World War II and is buried in Margraten. The work is based on letters he wrote to his unborn daughter Frederica. This makes 'Elegies' a very relevant tribute to Frederica's father and all the other soldiers who fought for our freedom.

First we hear hear Pärt's tranquil 'Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten' and Mendelssohn's Fifth Symphony ‘Reformation’. As a Jew in the Nazi time, Mendelssohn was a plaything of political and anti-Semitic stirrings. His Fifth Symphony was also composed during politically turbulent times and only premiered two years later, in 1832.
