Requiem 2006
The idea for an interregional open-air concert at the American Cemetery was born during the commemoration activities held in Margraten on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Europe. In addition to the annual celebration of Memorial Day in May, the Margraten Requiem is performed in September, the month in which the liberation of the Netherlands began in the province of Limburg. In view of the serenity of this unique location, the decision was made to perform a requiem within the framework of a ceremony befitting the occasion and the location.

The first “Margraten Requiem” took place at the American Cemetery on September 10, 2006. The Limburg Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by the Vocaal Collectief, performed the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The performance was a great success and generated a great deal of public enthusiasm. The Cemetery, which is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), had never before witnessed such a top-class concert. Before, during and after the performance, the Cemetery remained open for all visitors, free of charge. The municipality of Margraten, the ABMC and the Province of Limburg acted as hosts in sponsoring this impressive concert for over 2500 visitors, including representatives of the Dutch government, the American Embassy, the ABMC, the Dutch and American armed forces, the municipal and provincial governments, the Heuvelland (Hill Region) municipalities and the Euregional and international business community.
